Geek Chic | Luxe City Guides for iPhone - New York Times Blogs

Not that a Luxe City Guide ever took up much space in your pocket — its slim profile was always its genius. But these days it's always a cause for celebration when a traveler can dispense with paper altogether (however gorgeously laminated it may be) and bring all his intelligence with him on his smartphone. Our friends at Luxe have rolled out a wide collection of their snappy directories for iPhone, covering 20 cities in total, among them Los Angeles, Florence, Venice and Beijing. Now the hotels listings come with pictures; there are GPS-enabled maps and automatic updates; and the whole guide can be searched and personalized with itineraries based on your favorites. What remains from the dead-tree versions, of course, are the cheekily concise summations of a smart selection of accommodations, restaurants, shops, clubs and culture — along with sundry raves, grievances and anecdotes. If there's one thing lacking, it's that we might like to read more of what the Luxe founder Grant Thatcher and his team have to say about the three bistros we're trying to decide between (seriously, Thatcher's hilarious). In the Luddite version of the guide, each gets only a sentence. But now that we're measuring in megabytes and not column inches, why not gas on a bit?

Luxe Guides are available on iTunes for $5.99 each until Feb. 15, 2011, when the price goes back to the usual $9.99.

Map: Marathon to cause closures, delays

MANKATO — When the Mankato Marathon gets underway at 8 a.m. on Saturday, more than 2,000 runners will be taking to the streets.

Along the route — which guides marathon runners from the Minnesota State University campus, eastward on County Road 90, westward to Sibley Park, along Front Street and to the finish at the Verizon Wireless Civic Center — there are several road closures to be aware of:

  • Portions of Warren Street, Stadium Road and Monks Avenue will be closed from 7:55 a.m. to around 8:20 a.m.;
  • Front Street will be reduced to one lane and closed to through traffic from Warren, Liberty, Lamm and Cherry streets for entire race;
  • Traffic delays are expected at: Hwy. 22 and Co. Rd. 90 (8:20-9 a.m.), Hwy. 22 and Hwy. 83 (8:50-10:15 a.m.), Victory Drive and Balcerzak Drive (8:55-10:25 a.m.);
  • Organizers recommend avoiding the Riverfront Drive/Poplar Street and Riverfront/Stoltzman intersections as major delays are expected the entire race;
  • Also, expect delays at crosswalks for the Red Jacket Trail, including those on Moreland Avenue, Blue Earth Street and Owatonna Street as well as West 9th, West 8th, West 7th and West 6th streets.

Organizers also caution that parking will be closed in the following areas: Along Hickory Street from Riverfront Drive to Second Street; the Intergovernmental Center lot; MSU lots 20 and 21; and, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., the side of Front Street closest to Riverfront.
