Rimes: 'Off the Map' is not 'Grey's in a Jungle' - USA Today Posted: 10 Jan 2011 12:50 PM PST Jan 10, 2011 Rhimes: 'Off the Map' is not 'Grey's in a Jungle'So, why would it be wrong to call Off the Map - ABC's latest medical drama from Grey's Anatomy's Shonda Rhimes - Grey's in a Jungle? "Because it's not," insists Rhimes. "What's interesting to me about the show ... is it's really (creator Jenna Bans') voice, Jenna's characters. Jenna's not writing Grey's in the jungle. She's writing her own show. ... She basically put a scalpel in the hands of Indiana Jones." "These actors are embodying characters who really aren't at the top of their game personally or professionally," adds Bans. "So right off the bat on the character level, you're getting a huge difference." That's one reason why Jason George, who played Bailey's boyfriend on Grey's, is playing a completely different character on Off the Map. The added benefit of that? "No cross-overs," says Rhimes. The idea for the show, says Baus, came from talking to doctors who do international outreach. "Their passion is going off to these places, and it's often South America, working with people who have less resources than we do ... And I was also looking, as Hawaii was becoming more available (because Lost ended), for a place that (Hawaii) could double for." Along with that Hawaii-as-South-America scenery, you're also getting Meryl Streep's daughter Mamie Gummer. She says she grew up knowing she loved acting, but was "hyper-aware" of what becoming an actor might mean. So she went to Northwestern to study rather than jumping right into acting -- which is where she met co-star Zach Gilford and where she decided to go into the business. Has her mother given her advice? "We don't really talk shop. ... It's not like we own a chain of pizza joints and there's a secret ingredient to the sauce." -- Robert Bianco See photos of: Grey's Anatomy To report corrections and clarifications, contact Standards Editor Brent Jones.
