NEW MOVIES

"Drive Angry" (R). Not reviewed. Nicolas Cage stars in this action drama as a felon trying to avenge the death of his daughter. Opens Friday, Feb. 25.

"Hall Pass" (R). Not reviewed. Owen Wilson stars with Jason Sudeikis in this comedy in which two best friends are granted a week of freedom from their wives. Opens Friday, Feb. 25.

"The Illusionist" (NR). Based on an unproduced script by the late French comedian Jacques Tati, this animated film has a slender story about a magician that's fortunately charming enough to keep you engaged. Grade: B Opens Friday, Feb. 25.

NOW PLAYING

"Another Year" (PG-13). English writer-director Mike Leigh scores again with this detailed look at how a middle-aged couple's good nature is put to the test by a psychologically needy friend. The fully imagined characters are vividly brought to life by a cast including Jim Broadbent, Ruth Sheen and Lesley Manville. Grade: B+ Charles Theatre

"Barney's Version" (R). This adaptation of the Mordecai Richler novel concerns the marital woes that never cease for a Jewish man in Montreal. The narrative is choppy, but there are fine performances by Paul Giamatti, Dustin Hoffman, Rosamund Pike and Minnie Driver. Grade: B Charles Theatre

"Big Mommas Like Father, Like Son" (PG-13). Literally broad comedy in which FBI agent Martin Lawrence and stepson Brandon T. Jackson go into drag disguise in order to pursue a case. The jokes are as relentless as they are obvious, so you might as well just go along with it. Grade: C Owings Mills 17, Towson Commons 8, Hunt Valley 12, AMC White Marsh

"Biutiful" (R). Director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Spanish-language drama suffers from an excessive running time, but it's more or less held together by Javier Bardem's performance as a criminal in a grimy Barcelona neighborhood whose essentially good nature is epitomized by the protectiveness he feels for his two children. Grade: B- Charles Theatre

"Blue Valentine" (R). Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams play a couple whose disintegrating relationship is depicted with bracingly realistic vigor, but some of the character traits and narrative strands feel incomplete in the scripting and directing. Grade: B- Charles Theatre

"The Eagle" (PG-13). Channing Tatum plays a Roman commander leading his soldiers beyond Hadrian's Wall and into the wild Scottish highlands. This sword-and-sandal epic is not profound or subtle, but its macho immersion in the ancient Roman empire is entertaining. Grade: B Towson Commons 8

"Gnomeo & Juliet" (G). In this animated 3-D comic treatment of Shakespeare's romantic tragedy, the young lovers are garden gnomes, the rapidly dispensed pop cultural references are all over the map, the songs are by Elton John, and the eclectic voices include James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Hulk Hogan, Ozzy Osbourne, Patrick Stewart, Michael Caine, Jason Statham, Dolly Parton, Julie Walters and Maggie Smith. It's a busy mess, but has funny bits. Grade: C+ Towson Commons 8

"I Am Number Four" (PG-13). Good-natured alien teenagers fleeing a hostile alien race seek refuge on earth. Their attempt to fit in at a high school in a small town in Ohio has certain, er, universal qualities to which young viewers will relate. There is nothing distinctive about this sci-fi comedy, but it knows how to please its intended audience. Grade: C+ Owings Mills 17, Towson Commons 8, Hunt Valley 12, AMC White Marsh

"Just Go With It" (PG-13). Adam Sandler plays a plastic surgeon who pretends to be married in order to woo single women who sympathize with his fabricated tales of marital woe. There are so many illogical and otherwise forced scenes that this comedy really strains for laughs. Thank goodness for co-star Jennifer Aniston's expert comic timing, because she nearly salvages unbearable scenes. Grade: C Owings Mills 17, Towson Commons 8, Hunt Valley 12, AMC White Marsh, Rotunda Cinemas

"Justin Bieber: Never Say Never" (G). Even if you are not impressed by 16-year-old pop star Justin Bieber's singing and dancing, you've got to admit he has great hair. This 3-D documentary combines concert footage, home movies, and interviews with Bieber, his family and his very demonstrative fans. Grade: C+ Owings Mills 17, Towson Commons 8, Hunt Valley 12, AMC White Marsh

"The King's Speech" (R). Colin Firth plays the stuttering King George VI and Geoffrey Rush plays his speech therapist in the sort of inspirational, beautifully acted and handsomely produced English movie that amounts to Academy Awards bait. Although the clever banter and sentimental message sometimes verge on being just a vowel short of cloying, it's a smartly packaged picture that emotionally wins you over. Grade: B+ Rotunda Cinemas

"The Roommate" (PG-13). Never mind surviving freshman year at college in an academic sense, because it's your mentally unstable dorm roommate who may be out to get you. This psychological thriller starts off reasonably well, but quickly degenerates into cliched slasher movie effects. Grade: C+ Towson Commons 8

"Tiny Furniture" (NR). The 24-year-old writer-director of this small independent feature, Lena Dunham, uses herself and other actual members of her New York artist family as the cast for a whimsical and yet firmly grounded story about a recent college graduate trying to decide what to do in life. Grade: B+ Charles Theatre

"Today's Special" (NR). Enjoyable if overstated domestic comedy about an Indian family trying to make its New York restaurant profitable. Some of the convenient plot twists might make you wince, but you'll also smile at food preparation sequences so deliciously detailed that you'll want to head to your local Indian restaurant. Grade: B- Charles Theatre

"Unknown" (PG-13). Liam Neeson has a solid role as somebody attending a conference in Berlin whose very identity is soon called into question. Although the plot twists are so extreme that some viewers may peel off along the way, others will enjoy the car chases, shootouts and intrigue. Grade: B- Towson Commons 8, Rotunda Cinemas

All capsule reviews and grades are by Mike Giuliano unless otherwise noted. Bookings change on Friday. For showtimes and to confirm listings, call the phone number in Screen Scene.
