It seems there's never enough time in Silicon Valley to do the things we know we should do. Things like exercising or volunteering tend to take a back seat to answering Facebook messages or targeting those pesky Angry Birds.

But before you give up on the idea of giving back, you should take a look at the Field Guide to Community Service, a road map to Silicon Valley's various nonprofit agencies. It's published by the San Jose Leadership Council, a nonprofit that promotes civic engagement and conducts leadership training programs for adults and high school students.

"It's aimed at anyone who's wanted to get involved with their community but didn't know where to start," Leadership Council Executive Director Rick Holden said at the guide's launch party Thursday at the San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce.

The slim, spiral-bound volume has contact information for nonprofits, covering everything from the arts to health care, and provides tips for getting involved, whether you're looking at joining a board, volunteering or just donating. Holden says he has nearly 400 of the guides he'd like to give away, so if you're interested, contact him at rick@sjleadership.org.

Holden, by the way, announced last week that he'll be stepping down from two of the three posts he holds with the organization. The nonprofit's board of directors is launching a search for a new executive director,

and board member Ken Durbin will be taking over the high school leadership program.

The adult leadership program will continue under Holden's direction. "After 12 years, it was time to simplify my life a little," he said.

GET THE RED ON: Friday is National Wear Red Day, when the American Heart Association encourages everyone to don the crimson shade and raise awareness about heart disease.

The Heart Association's Silicon Valley chapter is doing its part to start the conversation by hosting a fun all-red fashion show near the entrance to Macy's at San Jose's Oakridge Mall.

One of the models will be Olympic swimmer Dana Vollmer, who was diagnosed with heart disease when she was 14. The free event begins at 5 p.m., with the fashion show starting at 6.

By the way, the show's emcee will be Christina Loren, who's gotten a lot of attention since she became the new meteorologist at NBC Bay Area last month. Perhaps you've seen her face on billboards and bus stop ads around town.

And if you're wondering what happened to John Farley, the station's popular former weather guy, the winds of change have taken him to the NBC affiliate in Columbia, S.C.

FENTON'S FANS: Team San Jose CEO Dan Fenton said an emotional goodbye to his colleagues Thursday night at a farewell party hosted by the San Jose Hilton.

A group led by Hilton general manager John Southwell -- and which includes Cyril Isnard and Clifton Clark, former honchos at San Jose's Fairmont and Marriott -- took part in toasting and slightly roasting Fenton, who announced his resignation last month.

Connie Martinez, CEO of 1stACT Silicon Valley, said she talked to members of Team San Jose's arts group and got about 10 good lines for a roast.

"They're so good, I'm going to take you out for a glass of wine to share them privately," Martinez quipped.

DEADLINE: Monday is the last day to register for the Santa Clara County Children's Summit, which is being held Friday at the Santa Clara Convention Center.

The morning conference is hosted by Kids in Common, a program of Planned Parenthood Mar Monte, and is aimed at community leaders interested in improving the lives of kids in the county.

For more information, or to register, go to www.kidsincommon.org.

The NOW Guide is the brainchild of EMP Co-Founder Troy Barton. Commenting on the guide Barton said: "We saw a real need for a publication like the NOW Guide.
