Stay.com Rolls Out New Personalized Travel Guides - PC Magazine

Posted: 19 Jun 2010 12:06 AM PDT

If you're planning a trip to a new destination, it can help to connect with a tour guide who knows the area and can tell you what's interesting about the region. If you can't afford one, or that's not the kind of trip you'd like to take, you can always head over to Stay.com to generate a customized guide for the things you plan to see and do when you get where you're going. The service allows you to create your own personal guide to the city you're visiting, complete with the locations that you plan to visit while you're in town.

Stay.com used to be a hotel-booking site only, but it has rolled out a new beta service that allows you to create your own guide to more than 50 cities around the globe, from Berlin to Bangkok and New York to Rio De Janeiro.

Simply click on the city you're planning to visit in the menu at the bottom of the page, or use the keyword search at the top of the page to see if locations in your destination are included. The 50 cities at the bottom of the page are the most popular, but they're not an all-inclusive list of destinations.

When you find the city you're planning to visit (or the closest large city) you'll see a page with information on that city, including a brief description at the top of the page and some highlighted destinations in your city below that. You can choose to view the highlights in either a descriptive grid with photos and brief descriptions of each venue, or on a top-down Google Map with push-pins for each highlighted destination.

Stay - Restaurants

You can also choose to view hotels, restaurants, bars, and nightlife, or "things to do" in your city by selecting one from the bar in the middle of the page. As you find activities, restaurants, or destinations that interest you, you can click to read more about them, view them on a map to see how far they are from where you'll be, or add them to your personalized travel guide.

You can even click on "guides" to see travel guides created for your city by other Stay.com members, complete with destinations built-in that you can just print and roll with. When you've finished compiling your personal travel guide, you can download the guide along with associated maps, directions, and photos to take with you on your trip. You'll have to sign up for an account at Stay.com to download the guide, but once you do, you'll have a complete itinerary along with suggested places to stay in the area.

Stay - Map

Stay.com hopes to make some money from the service by suggesting hotels and other travel services for your trip. In line with your personalized guide you'll see some hotels that Stay.com can book for you, for example. Even so, the custom guides are full of images and detail about the destinations and the guides are rich and complete. If you're looking for "must see" destinations the next time you go out of town, a Stay.com guide can be a big help.
