Google offers free navigation service for Android ... - Topnews

Posted: 23 Apr 2010 09:09 PM PDT

Those who find route-locating services from market leaders such as TomTom unaffordable, has been provided with an option that is absolutely free of cost.

Internet search giant Google has launched a free turn-by-turn GPS navigation system for handsets that run its Android OS in the UK and Ireland. However, the newly launched Google Maps Navigation service is available only for handsets that run 1.6 or later version of Android OS.

Google Maps Navigation is an Internet-connected GPS service which offers turn-by-turn voice guidance on Google Maps. Until now, the service was available only in the United States.

The newly launched service could undermine old service providers such as TomTom. TomTom at Apple iPhone charges more than 50 pounds to guide motorists to their destinations.

Earlier in January, mobile phones maker Nokia made it Ovi Maps service free following the US launch of Google Maps Navigation. Nokia's Ovi Maps service lets users to preload complete regional maps which guides them to their destinations.

Exploring Deep Deuce in Oklahoma City (Part 5) - Examiner

Posted: 23 Apr 2010 03:19 PM PDT

This is part 5 of our series on Oklahoma City. To start with part one click here.

In our last adventure, we had just started exploring Deep Deuce, the black commercial district back in the day where blacks flourished in part due to their drive to succeed and support each other, as well as because of segregationist laws at the time prohibiting blacks from crossing into certain areas of the city.

Anita Arnold is executive director of the Black Liberated Arts Center one of the premier African American arts organizations in the country. Originally founded almost 40 years ago to produce African American performances, the organization's scope has expanded and changed to encompass annual seasons in the music, arts and theater, as well as a history and heritage component that educates and promotes awareness of the rich music history of Oklahoma City musicians.

Arnold is passionate about black history in Oklahoma City and to date has written three books, as well as created step-on guides and historical maps for individuals and groups desiring to tour around and learn about the black history in the area.

About a visit to Oklahoma City in general, she said, "What I find that people like when they come is the 'total package.' Even if they come for a festival, they enjoy great music, golf, casinos, food, lots of art, jazz cruises…that's what makes for a great experience."

One of those newest entities is Deep Deuce is Sage Gourmet Café & Market, owned by husband and wife team Charifa and Kevin Smith. Charifa is an Oklahoma City native, and the duo moved back here from New York in 2008, purchasing the former, and now historic landmark Littlepage Building, built in 1924, and transforming it into the café and market.

Sage specializes in Made in Oklahoma products, natural and organic food and beverage selections and signature private label items. The food is fresh, the entrées creative and the atmosphere very relaxing and welcoming.

Inside, diners will find a full-scale mural encompassing one wall of the restaurant, which Charifa said pays homage to the building and the area.

"I don't think people know the history of the area like they should," she said. "There are historic markers around, but that is not enough. So I started the Deep Deuce business association to bring to light a lot of the history here."

Other entities in the area have begun done to do the same, and Charifa hopes it will move people past only seeing a nice trendy area, into appreciating the history behind it.

We've got one last look at Afrocentric Oklahoma City coming up!
