This weekend marks one of the biggest Art Hops of the year in downtown Kalamazoo.

The Art Hop is a collaboration between local businesses and artists held mostly on the first Friday of the month, with expanded Art Hops four times a year.

Almost 50 exhibitors at Friday's Art Hop will be photographers on various levels from award-winners to rookies and in a variety of styles.

Marvin King: Slowing hunger with photography

Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes Food Director Marvin King said his photos were mostly taken around Michigan, but there are some shots from a trip to Peru. King, who said he spends as much time in the woods as he can, said photography makes him "slow down and be as observant as possible."

KPL celebrates freedom with banned books-inspired art

The Kalamazoo Public Library and the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan Southwestern Branch are again combining for an art contest at Art Hop.

The prize money: $500 to the adult winner and $150 to the student winner. The contest is also split into two categories — adult and student — and there will be an honorable mention and people's choice winner.

Kalamazoo's October Art Hop collaborates with WMU conference

The extent of the collaboration between the Art Hop organizers, the community and the conference has wowed Ginger Owen, an assistant professor of photography and Intermedia at WMU and the conference's co-chairperson.
