Mafia Maps is a new application for the iPhone users, documenting real crimes committed throughout New York over a 70 year period.

From Murder Incorporated raising hell in East New York to Crazy Joe Gallo knocking heads in Red Hook to John Gotti gracing the cover of Time magazine, the decades covered here represent organized crime in its prime; bold, cold, cruel and calculating. Rather than broad history, however, Mafia Maps zooms in on specific events and exact locations.

Included in the application are Gambino, Bonanno, Genovese, Colombo and Lucchese organizations as well as the Westies in Hell's Kitchen, Murder, Inc. in Brownsville and a host of criminal outliers. Moreover, you can read about labor racketeering czar Louis Lepke, arch jewel thief Bobby Comfort, the infamous Jimmy "The Gent" Burke and his Robert's Lounge Gang and the elusive bank robber Willie Sutton. Then there's the story of federal agent Joe Pistone working undercover as gangster Donnie Brasco and the dastardly "Mafia Cops" Louis Eppolito and Stephen Caracappa working undercover as New York City detectives.

Of course, the location is also part of the story and you can see where each crime has occurred on a map. I would also like to see some augmented reality included in the picture too, but I guess that's waiting future updates to the app…

Tips for wine touring: 2010 Holiday Wine Guide - Oregonian

Here are some tips for enjoying a day in wine country:

  • Plan your itinerary with our interactive online maps at www.oregonlive.com/wineries. There you'll find information on each winery, and you can plan your route and stops. Some wineries are open only for holiday tasting events. Others are open all year. The online guide will help you find hours and events and will give you ideas for future trips as well.
  • Have a plan B and a plan C, too. After dreaming of a peaceful country drive past farms and vineyards, nothing can be more discouraging than a couple of hours spent sitting in traffic.
  • Plan to carpool. Gas is expensive; exhaust fumes are bad for the planet. Join forces with a few friends and share the duties of planner, designated driver and picnic-packer. You'll find that the travel time goes by much more quickly when there's good company in the car.
  • Talk to your neighbors. Which wineries do they like to visit and how do they get there? Depending on where you live, there may be a gem of a tasting room within an easy 30-minute drive from your home.
  • Don't try to squeeze in too many wineries in one day.
  • Pack snacks and bottles of water. Pack a picnic or call restaurants for lunch and/or dinner reservations.
  • Designate a driver and a front-seat navigator.
  • Don't bother washing your car before you go, as most winery driveways aren't paved.
  • Try to avoid Oregon 99W during peak hours. Use the online maps to find alternate routes.
  • Wear comfortable shoes and bring warm layers and a rain jacket. Don't wear cologne or perfume, as they will inhibit your ability to smell and taste.
  • If you plan to bring your children, pack plenty of activities to keep them occupied while you're tasting wine.
  • Be polite: Remember you are a guest at each winery, whose owners are extending their hospitality to you. Don't complain about tasting fees, which most wineries reimburse with any wine purchased, and which tend to keep tasting-room atmospheres civilized.
