Map store charts new course in U-City - The Spokesman-Review Posted: 11 Sep 2010 12:00 AM PDT September 11, 2010 in Washington VoicesJuli Bergstrom-Wasson The Spokesman-Review
After serving customers for more than two decades from downtown Spokane, owners of a local mapping business decided it was time to chart an alternative path. Linda and Steve Mitrovich relocated their Northwest Map and Travel Book Center to Spokane Valley in July after 24 years in downtown Spokane, most recently near the corner of Howard Street and Sprague Avenue. "We do cover the world," says Linda Mitrovich, who said the timing was right for the couple to make the move. They live nearby and mostly take turns managing the daily operations of the store. Customers will now find them in the U-City North Shopping Plaza. Northwest Map & Travel Book Center features a broad selection of maps, ranging from hiking trails across the Inland Northwest to cities and countries across the ever-changing political landscape. Their maps are useful as well as decorative, and include nautical cartography of nearby lakes as well as street atlases – many of which were created by the Mitroviches themselves. They also sell U.S. Geological Survey Maps, Forest Service ones for the Northwest, and Washington State Department of Natural Resources maps and hiking guides for the United States and Canada. The shop has long been popular to those seeking detailed maps of the Inland Northwest and Canadian Rockies for outdoor recreation. In fact, the business is an outgrowth of the couple's personal interest in hiking the Canadian Rockies and charting the territory. Steve Mitrovich is a mechanical engineer with a background in geography. The couple moved to Spokane from the East Coast in 1984, largely because of the Inland Northwest's outdoor opportunities. Many of their customers include local utility companies, fire and school districts, home delivery services and marketing and sales companies wanting to outline territories. Customers also will find store shelves lined with guide books for world travel, map accessories and globes for sale. The Mitroviches also offer custom framing and laminating services. Real examples dress up 'Fashion Law' guide - San Francisco Gate Posted: 10 Sep 2010 04:58 PM PDT "Fashion Law: A Guide for Designers, Fashion Executives, and Attorneys"Edited by Guillermo C. Jimenez and Barbara Kolsun (Fairchild Books, 352 pages, $80)Law tends to follow trends. Between TV shows such as "Project Runway" and "Launch My Line," Michelle Obama wearing dresses from emerging designers and people marketing their own designs via the Internet, fashion is more accessible and popular than ever. No wonder the normally dowdy legal community is finally taking note. Law firms are increasingly forming practice groups to serve fashion companies, law schools are now offering "fashion law" as an elective course, and aspiring lawyers are hoping to represent everything from apparel and textile companies to multimillion-dollar fashion houses. It's only appropriate that along came "Fashion Law: A Guide for Designers, Fashion Executives, and Attorneys," written by a team of attorneys and edited by Guillermo C. Jimenez and Barbara Kolsun. The book covers intellectual property, corporate, real estate, employment, contract and international law. The challenge of writing this book is to outline extensive legal issues for lawyers to consider while still acting as a comprehensive guide for industry professionals who need to understand the importance of protecting and promoting a successful fashion company from a legal perspective. As an attorney practicing in the niche area of hospitality law, I appreciated the book's approach. Jimenez and Kolsun set forth two consistent themes: For lawyers, practicing in a niche area requires that you understand the industry; for executives and fashion designers, please do not try this at home. While the book covers an array of dry, technical legal areas, it also interweaves examples of actual lawsuits and problems involving industry giants such as Calvin Klein, Kate Spade and L'Oreal. This serves the dual purpose of explaining to the industry professional the importance of being protected as well as illustrating to attorneys the day-to-day business realities of the fashion industry. Non-lawyers will quickly realize that this is not a self-help book but rather a road map of legal issues to be considered by both lawyers and fashion industry professionals. It could make for a boring legal treatise, but the book is saved by the real-life examples, from factory compliance to what happens when your high-end brand ends up in a discount warehouse because of a breach of the licensing agreement. Or how to protect yourself if your spokesmodel turns out to be Tiger Woods. The book also covers the growing problem of counterfeiting - a subject that hit home in San Francisco when, in early August, federal agents broke up a counterfeiting ring in Fisherman's Wharf and seized $100 million worth of knockoff designer goods. Initially, I was enthusiastic at the idea of reviewing a book on fashion law - something seemingly so glamorous for our drab profession. However, I was quickly reminded that the law is still the law - technical and somewhat tedious, no matter how fabulous the subject matter or how pretty the people. While this book might not be a cover-to-cover read for everyone, it will undoubtedly serve as a great resource for both attorneys and fashion industry professionals, and as part of the foundation of future fashion houses.
