AMC releases new map, guide for Mahoosuc region - Sun-Journal Posted: 15 Jun 2010 08:42 PM PDT BETHEL — Early Tuesday afternoon and just in time for summer vacations, Appalachian Mountain Club officials announced the release of their new "AMC Mahoosucs Map and Guide." The publication, which retails for $6.95, highlights outdoor recreation opportunities in the rugged Mahoosuc Mountain region, which straddles the border of Maine and New Hampshire, north of the White Mountains. The Mahoosuc region offers a wide variety of four-season recreation opportunities. The map and guide features more than 30 of the best hiking, paddling, biking, and cross-country skiing opportunities for all abilities.  A detailed, hill-shaded map provides complete coverage of the Lake Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge, the local segment of the Appalachian Trail, and the new 39-mile Grafton Loop Trail, plus local campsites, picnic areas, put-ins for paddling, and boat ramps. Bryan Wentzell, AMC's Maine policy manager, said Tuesday in Portland that AMC hopes retailers, innkeepers, and proprietors of other establishments will see the Mahoosucs Map and Guide as a tool to encourage customers to extend their stay or plan return trips. "One goal in publishing the Mahoosucs Map & Guide is to let people know that this region is a great place to visit, whether for a day or for a week, with lots of options for getting outdoors," Wentzell said. Robin Zinchuk, executive director of the Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce, welcomed the news. "The Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce is thrilled that AMC has produced a comprehensive hiking map of the Mahoosucs," Zinchuk said. "We think that this tool will help raise awareness of the quantity and quality of outdoor recreation opportunities within an easy drive of our communities. The Bethel area also has an abundance of visitor services, including dozens of accommodation choices and restaurants that would be appealing to individuals and groups seeking a vacation in the region." Rob Burbank, AMC public affairs director, said the map and guide is a collaborative effort of the Mahoosuc Initiative, which is addressing ecological and economic needs of the region through land conservation, community development, and economic development. The Mahoosuc Initiative is supported by local conservation and community organizations, and regional and national conservation groups. Among those who contributed to the Mahoosucs Map and Guide, were Jim Mitchell of Bethel, executive director of the Mahoosuc Land Trust, and trust president Steve Wight of Newry; Ferg Lea and Jeff Stern of the Androscoggin River Watershed Council; Larry Ely of Shelburne, N.H.; Sally Manikian of Tri-County CAP in Berlin, N.H.; and Norman Charest, Berlin Economic Development director.
